HOW TO REFRESH YOUR BACKYARD SPACE

Summer is finally here, and after what feels like the longest winter in history our outdoor spaces may feel a little tired. No need to panic though, with a small investment you can liven up your backyard space and create a cozy retreat. I’ve partnered with Indigo to share my top tips for refreshing an outdoor area, so you and your guests can relax in style all summer long.

BLEND YOUR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES
Your outdoor space should feel like an extension of your home—from the style to the colour scheme to the overall feeling. Do not be afraid to shop your home and bring some of your favourite pieces outside when entertaining, or when you know that the weather forecast is in your favour. I have a machine washable rug that I bring outside, when we are hosting guests, to add a touch of cozy and integrate our indoor and outdoor spaces. I do the same with pillows and throw blankets, as well as some of my favourite small furniture pieces and accessories. For instance, if you have a bar cart you should absolutely wheel this outdoors. You’ll have an extra surface space for drinks and snacks, allowing your guests to help themselves, so you can spend more time socializing.

CREATE A COZY AMBIANCE
Add layers of comfort to your space by not only incorporating the suggestions above, but also by hanging some strings of lights and lighting candles. The warm glow will bring coziness to your space, making dinner parties last well into the evening. If your outdoor space isn’t wired, bring your portable speaker or Google Home outside to play your favourite summer playlist.

OPT FOR NEW TABLEWARE
Melamine has really picked up its design game—there are limitless options that are incredibly nice, you’ll want to use them indoors, too. One of the easiest ways to refresh al fresco dining is to purchase a new set of plates, glasses and a few serving trays. Mix these with your favourite cutlery and coasters for the perfect tabletop setting.

ADD FRESH GREENS
Adding a few potted plants can give you a lush tropical look, while adding the vibrancy and dimension that only real plants can give. A few statement plants and succulents will go a long way, and fill any décor gaps. Splurge on a few new pots for table surfaces, and when entertaining don’t be afraid to bring out some fresh florals in your favourite vase.

CREATE A CORNER FOR THE KIDS
A kids’ corner is often an afterthought, but purchasing a few new things to keep kids entertained will not only keep them outdoors, but will even possibly allow you a few minutes to enjoy your morning coffee, and maybe even let you read a chapter of your book. An inflatable pool, lounge chairs, some colourful strings of lights, and a few new toys will have kids excited, and keep them cool and entertained. I recommend putting together an outdoor kit of colouring activities, books and a few toys that are for outdoor activities only, to keep things fresh and special in your outdoor oasis.
